Withdrawal without receipt

April 22nd, 2006

I am really getting sick of the Northern Bank ATMs. Once again I took out much more cash than I had planned to. So you put in your pin number, then hit enter. I wait, then it changes. The set of options I am given are ‘cash’, ‘cash with receipt’ and ‘Check balance’. I selected ‘cash’, but because there is such a long pause before it actually does anything – quite like your computer on a really bad day – I can never be sure if I hit the button properly. As you would probably do yourself, I press it again. On the next screen are the amounts in multiples of £10. Top left is £10 and below that £20 then £30 and £40. On the top right hand side is £50, moving up in slightly larger multiples to £250 or £300.

So because I hit the button again, before it had changed to the next screen, I was given £50 instead of my planned withdrawal of only £10. These ATMs are fairly new, with nice full-colour screens and displaying nice pictures. But this happens too often.
