toejam photomeet dublin

May 19th, 2008

That feeling I normally get before the blog awards of “oh my, I haven’t read enough blogs lately, or left enough comments. I will be asking everyone how they have been only for them to say ‘not been reading my blog? It’s all there.’ And I will have to say no.

on the bus to dublin

Thanks to Twitter this wasn’t the case as I met with John, Catriona, Will, Redmum, Darren, Lexia, Gingerpixel, and Nathalie and Eoghan. Twitter helps me feel more in touch when I don’t get the opportunity to read every new blog entry.

After meeting Davy we made our way to the Bernard Shaw Pub for the Toejam carboot sale, at the back of the Bernard Shaw Pub in the Portobello area of Dublin.

The carboot sale had a very retro feel to it, plenty of bright colours, helped by the sun (not good for my unprotected eyes – I can’t find my sunglasses), good music, crazy outfits, with plenty of cheap crap for sale, some useful stuff too im sure.

From one market to another; Temple Bar Food Market was next – Many of us spent much of our time here eating; dumplings and noodles in my case – they tasted great. Then came drinky time, in the Fitzsimmons Bar, 5th floor beer garden, where Debz joined us, though it wasn’t long before the sun disappeared and the wind started blowing, lots.

Although I didn’t voice this at the time I kinda feel we stayed at the carboot sale a little long. The jumble sale was a great location, though small and it wasn’t too long before I had circled it enough to have creeped everyone out as they were innocently selling stuff. I think having a route planned out planned is the best idea for street shooting until the final destination is reached, preventing staying in the same place for too long. It was a great location,

It was undoubtedly a really enjoyable day. Everyone was really nice, each with various insights and discussion was of workshops, future photomeets and alternative locations including Belfast, and the North Coast (Bushmills!).

After dinner myself and Davy headed to the Market Bar, a huge place which was definitely a market at one point. There we met anthony, darragh, darren, ben, alexia. Plenty of drinks were had.

I missed the last Aircoach, which is stupidly at 9pm, so rather than waste my return ticket, I managed to find a some shelter in a cheap hostel, which was pretty dirty and I almost slipped in a pool of vomit at the top of the stairwell in the morning. Doesn’t really when all you need is a place to ‘crash’ for the night, I wasn’t worried at 2am – the bed was fine. I slept. I was able to stay another day, always a plus. The weather was awesome on Sunday, better than Saturday.

So yeah, it was a great weekend. Photos from Sunday will be posted during the week. Thanks, cool Dublin bloggers – until we meet again!

Great pics Phil, really wonderful. I’m delighted (and a little more than jealous ;) ) to see the stairs pics looks even better than it did in the camera preview. The cup cakes as well look far too good… I want one, now. You got some great pics.

Like you I was thinking at one stage we were done with the sale and then more people joined us, so it seemed only right, polite and nice to let them do the rounds and it gave us the chance to be very bold and have an early beer!

It does raise the question though about how organised you need to be with these events. Myself I don’t whether an organised event is the way to go, in theory it does sounds better, depending on the venue or event. I imagine that would work for our proposed North coast run, but then who knows! Someone might go mad taking pics and it would be hard to say lets stick to the schedule.

I suppose all in all you just want people to enjoy themselves, not everything will be exactly how everyone wants it and you just try to find a happy medium.

But back to Saturday I was thrilled with the turn-out of everyone, which was brilliant and it was really cool that yourself and Davy came down. Youse coming down to Dublin has made me all the more determined to get some Dublin (and beyond) photobloggers up to Belfast and I am really into the idea of us doing the North coast. Who knows maybe we’ll be able to organise a mass-overnighter staying somewhere in the Glens of Antrim! (We also talked about Cork which could be something else for the summer!)

So we have the North coast and Cork to think about for the summer!

Hi Phil, great shots and lovely to meet you on Saturday, we had some good nerdy chats in Fitzsimons!
I must hold up my hands and apologise – it was completely our fault that you guys had to stay longer than was ideal at the carboot sale, because we didn’t get there ’til 2. I hadn’t taken into account how quickly the place could be scouted and snapped, but I totally understand that you guys were well done after an hour, so sorry again.
Many thanks to Redmum though for being so lovely and waiting for us – hope you enjoyed your cheeky early pint and thanks for a lovely day!

Mr Phil, it was really lovely meeting you and you’ve got some great pics there.

(Next time, you’re not staying in a hostel – you can crash in our spare room)

Phil it was great to meet up again, if you need any more info in relation to that wordpress malarky I was talking about give me a holler. In relation to the pictures they are stunning, and I hate to say it and I never thought I would but the phesant claw photo is fantastic.

Love the photos you got, the one of the stairwell is excellent.

We probably got a bit too large in number for the car boot sale since it was such a small place, but looking at the photos everyone got I think maybe being forced to look beyond the first shots and keep snapping was a good thing.

I’d love a trip up the coast by the way, sounds like a brilliant idea.

Thanks all for the comments and kind words.

@Redmum & @Nathalie – Regarding what I said about staying at Toejam too long; I know that we were waiting for Natalie, and I mean no offence by mentioning it, I just wanted to raise the point as something to think about in the future (not about arriving on time); to not stay in the one place for too long.

@Claire – thats a good point about staying for a while and forcing yourself to see more.

@Darren – Thanks for the offer! Maybe take you up on that next time.

@McAWilliams – I think I will take you up on that soon, when I get some time.

very nice meeting you Phil. I did recognise you from the blog awards but had no idea then who you where then. Now I have so many new blogs to catch up on!

I have to say one problem with these meets is not having each others mobile numbers or even if one person had em we could at least ring the late, and let them know where we may be going too. Just an idea to fire out at ya all.

@McAWilliams – That is a good point. Though I had Shauneen’s number and Dave had Claires. We did manage to get through eventually. But it would be a good idea exchange numbers all round.
