dublin photowalk

May 23rd, 2008

Last Sunday began quite hazy, with the initially irritating, but soon quite relaxing, and reassuring, sound of the DART outside the window. It was a beautiful morning, set to be a great day. I quickly left the hostel and scurried around the streets hunting for an ATM, Red Bull and somewhere to have breakfast.

After much searching around the usual streets I decided to venture into the café with the best name in town; The Bad Ass Café. With some food in me, the camera came out and so began hours of only seeing the city through the lens.

I went to all the usual places, shot the usual sites; the people, the buskers of Grafton Street, statues, buildings. Again. For my next trip I hope to do a little research, to venture away from out of the city centre for a change.

I guess each time I go to dublin, I have a purpose, whether it’s meeting people, blog awards, shopping (in the city centre) etc, but I’ve done it all too much now. I need to get out of O’Connell Street, Grafton Street, Henry Street, Wicklow Street, Dame Street, Temple Bar, The Quay, St Stephen’s Green etc.

I grew up in Dublin and lived there for nearly thirty years and I don’t think I ever took a photo of the place!

Similar story. I’d only take pictures of people. The digital camera has changed all that (I’m even taking pics of my commute now), but I’m not living in Dublin any more.
Unusual places? Weeeeelllll

Next time you’re coming to Dublin, map where you’re going. Map all the places you have to go to, and see if you can make a single loop of them all. No doubling back on to the main streets (avoid the main streets if you can and use the buildings back doors, I know that Pennys hate me for cutting thought their shop.
If you’ve going in to a shopping centre, ignore the shops and head straight for it’s multistroy car park and peek through the windows / shutters etc
Don’t take the lift (if possible). The stairs might have different views. For example, instead for that wide shot of O’Connell bridge, take the boardwalk and try to take a shot of the underside.
From that shot of the GPO, see if you could have taken it from
a) Pennys beside it
b) Cleary’s across the road (or a reflection in their windows if there is a good juxtaposition (focus might make it pointless)
c) A reflection of he potocllo (?) in the window with the Fionn McCoole Statue
d) A photo of the raven in the foreground with the city behind it
e) A reflection of the GPO in a passing bus (I do reflections a lot don’t I)

I think the next photowalk should be of that nature… pity I can’t make it

@Will

So much to learn there. I have a long way to go!

Million thanks.

If its any help remember the perl mantra

There is more than one way to do it

So when presented with something that has appeared on countless postcards, look around it for other angles of approach.

Even buildings have personalities, and personal quirks. See if you can find them?
Look carefully and you might find an angle where the dour faced statue looks like its smiling.

@Will Knot – thanks for that – some really great advice there. I shall be sure to think about it all next time i’m shooting something, something that everyone else has already shot thousands of times…
