managing email

January 13th, 2009

There are changes afoot, which you may have noticed, with occasional glitches or the lack of anything at this address. Basically I have been working on a variety of things behind the scenes, whilst attempting to keep everything looking as normal as possible in the mean time.

Unfortunately though I have been left with very little time to actually update the blogs, so I’m hoping you can maybe help with the process I’m going through at the minute.

The final stage is email. With new domains and new hosting everything is pretty much up in the air and so I’v e been looking at new ways of managing my mail for all the addresses and domains I maintain. I am certainly thinking of cutting it down to just one, or in some cases two for each domain, though it still requires some form of good management to look after.

Previously I had used my original GMail address to manage everything, domain addresses forwarded to the GMail address and I can send mail from those addresses. The problem with this is that some mail clients, such as Outlook tracks that the email has been signed and does the entire “on behalf of” thing. But Yahoo Mail does not.

It’s quite frustrating to discover that my private GMail account has been given out rather than simply the domain-based address. And so I’ve decided to look for something different. Based around GMail, of course, the chosen method must be able to handle all domains and alert me on the desktop when I have new mail.

I’m curious about how everyone else manages their mail before I choose what I am going to use. If you could help me out by completing the little poll below that’d be great. Feel free to add extra info in the comments.

I recently set up Thunderbird as a test for a site I was doing and found it very easy. I’m going to set it up for all my site emails but still keep them forwarded to Gmail and then fire up Thunderbird when I need to reply to any of my domain mails.

Thunderbird way too bulky for me – use Mail and run everything through the Gmail server for spam purposes. Getting more reliable, but used to be down all the time.

Using Google Mail apps and it works really well offer the brilliant antispam features, massive storage and it also means mail isn’t adding to the bandwidth on your hosting package.

Have to second that opinion – Google Mail Apps is wicked good. Easy to add extra addresses too, gives you all the aesthetics of a @domain.com address – with the benefits of Gmail combined.

All my various personal emails run through Gmail, either Apps or Googlemail, but they all ultimately get forwarded to my main Google Apps email address.

I tend to access it and my work email address (which also forwards to a Googlemail account for archiving purposes) through Thunderbird via IMAP. I use TBird as a hangover from before I switched to a Mac – haven’t put the effort into getting to know Mail.app. Perhaps I should.

I’m resigned to having “on behalf of” on mail I send through Google from other addresses, at least for now.

I agree with most of the other comments here. All my mail picked up by Gmail, then forwarded to my .ME mail & others. Antispam is the best, particularly important on a mobile device where you actually pay to download spam!

Windows Live Mail here. Mainly since I use Windows Live Admin Center to have my e-mail hosted with my own domain on Windows Live Hotmail.

Too much Windows Live in that sentence… :(

I have about 10 different address, all of which redirect or forward to a Google Apps account. As Andy said, it saves alot of personal bandwidth as everything is run through google.com.

For years I used Outlook to organise my many email addresses. A few months ago I moved to Gmail and I haven’t looked back. It’s so versatile and simple to use. Gmail ftw.
