Nice City; Pity about the River
April 20th, 2009
Surprise, surprise, once again on a rare hot and sunny day in Belfast the River Lagan looks and smells like complete shit. It can be smelt well before it’s seen; that awful eggy smell.
So much for the Lagan Weir, completed in 1994 at a cost of £14m, which aimed to “keep the river at an artificially constant level” and “put an end to the appearance of unsightly smelly mud flats at low tide”. I mentioned this almost a year ago, and although I have noticed some work beind done around different spots of the river, the problem still pursists.
Fifteen years on, and a nice vistors centre later this is no different from it ever was before. Complete with two shopping trolleys, this is a fucking disgrace and destroys the lower Ormeau Road area; which, all things considering, is not the place of terror it used to be. In fact, the Ormeau Bridge often provides a beautiful view of the sunset as the river meanders around the bends. I can only imagine much of the rest of the city where the river runs is also affected.
These images [taken with camera phone] were captured this evening:

Someone should sort out this mess.
