iTouch – Part 1 Music

November 12th, 2009

I’ve felt slightly inadequate for a while now. I don’t have an iPhone. People are shocked when I tell them, but it’s true. The next best thing is surely the iPod Touch, you know, without being tied to a overpriced contract with O2 for all eternity. Having been with it for a few weeks I’ve quickly come to love it, as I knew I would. I no longer am couped in my study on laptop in order to be “connected” (then again, my laptop is not tied to the one spot having got a fresh battery issued from Apple just a few days ago).

The Apps are brilliant, the internet is the same as the internet anywhere else, video rocks and of course, it is an iPod. This device truly rocks my world right now.

Having been without a personal music playing device for 3 years – my first iPod, died after a year and I never bothered to replace it. My life has suddenly changed since this new purchase, to the point where I can’t believe I ever lived without one for so long. I had forgotten what it was like to walk down the street in a completely different mindset thanks to the music.

Music changes me. Often I will listen to music based on my mood, but I think more-so the music will determine my mood. So with the music blasting through my ears at 90% volume; everything is different. Everything is better.

Royksöpp, Death Cab for Cutue, Calvin Harris, Damien Rice, Matchbox Twenty, Gnarls Barkley, Slagsmålsklubben, Sigur Rós, Ratatat, M83, Josh Ritter, Placebo, Travis, Stereophonics, JJ72, all a completely different experience from listening at home. You know those songs that make the hairs on your arms stand on end and your whole body shiver? Yeah, I get that a lot. It happens when I walk through the busy city centre. And no one knows about it. There haven’t been tears yet, but heck I’ve been close to it!

Listening to Mindless Self Indulgence while making my way through the crowds in the busy City Centre I feel fearless. No harm can come of me as I weave between the people towards the destination.

Previously, I listened to the very funny Jett Loe’s Letter to America podcast (unfortunately no longer broadcasting), he made me laugh a lot, and in public it’s a strange experience when you realise you’re doing it. Now I sing along to pretty much everything, okay not quite, lip-syncing really – but I’ll never be as good as Davey.

Recently I’ve begun walking a lot more. Although it’s only a 30min walk to the city centre from my house, I tend to take the bus far too often. Now I’ve ditched the bus (most of the time) and Translink’s overpriced fares. Armed with an umbrella and my iPod I am invincible; and no longer alone.

The music sounds different. The world is blocked out.
I feel more alive.

Here’s how my 32gb iPod currently looks:
