Big Freeze 2010

January 13th, 2010

All this talk of ‘black ice’ and ‘freezing snow’ has been a bit nuts lately. Coldest temperatures since the ice age and landscapes that look like they belong in the Antarctic. It’s been cold and disruptive; pipes bursting, the salt supply of whole countries gone and old people dying. with up to 6in of snow in some parts of England, schools closed. The coldest recorded temperature was -22.3°C in Altnaharra, Scotland – coldest since 1995 where the temp reached -27.5°C.

From ‘Big Freeze’ to what’s now being referred to by the news organisations as the ‘Big Thaw’ – the Telegraph is reporting this morning that “From December 24 until January 11 NIW detected 500 burst water mains, adding that more are being discovered “on a daily basis” across the province.”

Although the temperature has risen slightly and become a little ‘milder’ it is due to get cold again. It isn’t as if this hasn’t happened before. Between rain, snow and cold, how long will it be before the country doesn’t come to a complete standstill as a result.
