How To Rename Folders in Google Reader

January 14th, 2010

As this is a fairly complicated process, I’ve made my own short guide to renaming folders in Google Reader.

  1. Select a feed to put into the new folder.
  2. In the ‘Feed Settings’ drop-down select ‘New Folder’:
  3. Enter the new name for the folder:

Then

  1. Go to Settings > Reader Settings > Subscriptions.
  2. Type the name of the folder in the box at the left. (I’m renaming ‘News’ to ‘News (mainstream)’.

  3. Select the feeds that don’t match – this can be a pain if there are similarly named folders.
  4. Go to ‘More actions…’ drop-down and select the new folder for the feeds to be added to:
  5. Remove from the old folder.
  6. Go to ‘Folders and Tags’ and click the ‘Delete’ icon to remove the old folder:

Such a long process, surely there could be an easier way (Google???).

Agreed. It’s very awkward. Given that’s easy to change the names of labels in Gmail, why shouldn’t it be the same for Google Reader? They’re both essentially tagging systems of some sort.
