Why a Photo365 is a Good Thing, and Why I’m Not Doing One

January 25th, 2010

It’s a simple idea – take a photograph each day of the year and post it online.
Generally seen as one for the amateur as a way of getting into the habit of taking more photographs and ’seeing’ more photographic opportunities.
It’s definitely great for some – and if you’re someone who wouldn’t be inclined to take photographs often enough I would recommend giving it a go.

I tried it in ‘08/’09, taking the slightly unorthadox start/end date of my birthday in July. It was fun, some of the time, however, I only lasted 3 or 4 months. As the days got shorter and colder fewer opportunities for good images presented themselves to me and so I abandoned the project, as I suspected I would, fed up with filling my Flickr stream with images I wasn’t happy with.

While, it’s a fun project, there will always be days where imagination is not on your side or outside influences prevent a photo from being taken… And so this year I won’t be doing it.
Kate has started a themed photo idea called ‘Chooseday’ – Each Tuesday a subject will be chosen and photos can be posted to the Flickr group. It’s great for when you’re stuck for ideas.

While still deciding whether or not do one one this year, I took a few images I could have potentially used:

photo365
Jan 1st

photo365
Jan 2nd

photo365
Jan 3rd

photo365
Jan 4th

When an image of the kitchen appears you know it’s time to stop. But I was never really planning on doing it anyway.

Are you doing a Photo365 this year? How long do you reckon you’ll last?

I’ll be continuing, and wrapping up my Day 516 project this year. It’s basically an elongated photo365 that I started the day I left Ireland and extended to an arbitrary future point. One motivation was, as you wrote about above, to get (back) into the habit of taking photographs, a forced engagement so-to-speak. The other side of it was to chronicle a journey and have a daily outlet through which to post thoughts about travel, design, photography, emigration… all that’s personal and important to me.

I agree that the days you start posting pictures of the kitchen, or yourself in the bathroom mirror, are a low point but I see them more as a “necessary evil”, a temporary lull, far outweighed by the advantages.

Considering I just changed from posting daily photos to every 3 days I don’t think I’ll be doing a photo365 thing any time soon. I work from home too so photos in the kitchen would appear quite quickly me thinks!

The unfortunate thing about photoblogs is that it can take quite some time to go out and take a photo, come home and work on it, but it only takes a second for a reader to scan your blog in their feedreader and move on to the next photoblog.

Oh, love the last photo. The glowing “WAIT” really catches the eye and the flurry of snow goes to show how dedicated you have to be to take photos sometimes. :)

Thanks for the plug there Phil :)

I had two reasons for undertaking the 365 day challenge. Firstly, I wanted to take myself out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. I knew mundane photos would crop up eventually but I wanted to see if that would help with my photographic creativity – I’m not sure I’m doing very well so far but hopefully by December I will have improved! The second reason was really just to document a year of my life – a photographic diary if you will.

I start my 365 day project as a challenge for 2010. It’s the first time I’m trying to do… so. At the current moment I’m trying to make a monthly theme, this one was studies and work, because most of my time now was passed at home studding for the exams. Next month I will challenge myself with another thing… and the days are longer too. I hope to learn, in this way, how to win some daily habits (I suck on that) and learning dealing with creativity.

And like Kate said, it’s a photographic diary :) (And a flickr filler too :P)
